Interview With Brody Williams
Featured - June 2009

Interviewed by Tammy Renee'
It's so great to have you here, Brody! I've heard so much good stuff about you and I'm excited to be interviewing you. How long have you been in the fitness industry?
BW: Thank you, Tammy. I have always had a strong desire to take my body to the next level. If you stop to look around, very few people in your everyday scenery have been able to physically and mentally push themselves to achieve more than average. With that said, I've been a Certified Fitness Trainer for a little more than a year now, and recently started my own training company, B FIT AMERICA.
WP: I bet you're excited about your own company! What made you decide to get into the fitness industry?
BW: I've always been athletic. I’ve never was really into lounging around the house and playing video games. I was always outdoors, so I already had a passion for fitness. On top of that, a lot of people told me I couldn't make it as a natural steroid-free bodybuilder, so that lit a fire under me to prove them wrong. Mainly, my younger brother, whom is 17 years old, inspires me. He has Type-1 Diabetes, which unfortunately he'll have to deal with for his entire life. He motivates me to motivate others to realize how important life is, and that they need to start now before it's too late to change. He's the strong one in my opinion.
WP: I am sorry to hear about your brother. But, it sounds like you both are turning something negative into something positive. That's outstanding. Who ever said that you would never make it as a drug-free athlete was very wrong. You have had a lot of success in your career! Not just being a Personal Trainer but with your career as a whole in this industry. Talking about you being a Personal Trainer, what is your educational background? What are your certifications?
BW: I graduate high school in 2005 with honors in Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, and English. I currently hold a trainer certification through the International Sports Sciences Association and am also currently in college pursuing a degree in Physical Therapy.
WP: That's great! How long have you been a personal trainer?
BW: I've been certified for a little over a year, but have always helped others learn new ways to improve their health and well being inside the gym.
WP: Wow! A year and already own a company. That's almost unheard of. What do you feel sets you apart from all other personal trainers out there?
BW: My passion sets me apart from other trainers out there. I've always believe that people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care. Once that happens, you've really connected with your client. A trust is formed which then results in a long lasting training relationship. Too many people get into the business for the wrong reasons, mainly a quick buck. If you are truly passionate about it for the RIGHT reasons, success will follow. I always say that anyone can be a trainer, but not everyone can be a good trainer.
WP: So true and well spoken! Where do you train your clients? Do you train them in a gym, at home, or where?
BW: I train my clients at a local Anytime Fitness. I have been there since the beginning, when it was just rock and concrete. Since then, I've branched off and become an independent contractor, running my own training business, but I've kept my training there, to in some way show my loyalty for them giving me my first opportunity.
WP: How much time per day do you typically spend with a client?
BW: My sessions usually last around 45 minutes, but I allow my clients to keep in contact outside the gym as well via email and my personal cell, just in case they had important questions regarding nutrition, etc. at home.
WP: Sounds like you're always there for your clients. That shows your passion. How many days do you suggest your clients to work out in a week?
BW: I recommend cardio 6-7 days a week if your goal is weight loss, less if you are bodybuilding or trying to add weight. Resistance training depending on your physical capabilities and goals could range anywhere from 4-6 times a week.
WP: What helps you get up each morning?
BW: Ha! My alarm clock get me up each morning. Intensity in the gym requires deep sleep. Ha-ha! On a serious note, now. What gets me up each morning is honestly knowing that I am going to the gym to take it to the next level; the next step down that long road. Every workout matters. If my feet don't hit the floor on the side of the bed each morning, then my progress isn't going anywhere. Really now-a-days, it's habit.
WP: You still have to have the determination within you to make it a habit! What forms of exercise do you find to be the most effective for the following: To gain mass:
BW: Max-OT, HIT, and DC. All of these have worked exceptionally well for me. They help me pack on the most amount of size as quick as naturally possible.
WP: To lose weight:
BW: Functional and Circuit type training. As a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. I do a lot of MMA style conditioning when I was to drop some weight. It's a great workout for that particular goal and it keeps the heart strong cardiovascular wise, as well.
WP: To cut:
BW: Super-sets, Tri-sets, less rest between sets, and overall more intensity. I really crack down on the cardio and manipulate my diet.
WP: Before competition:
BW: I plan on doing my first show in August or September, but most likely carb loading and depletion, as well as, water manipulation.
WP: It would be a stupid question to ask if you model or not. So, I'm skipping all of those questions and going straight in. Who have you worked with?
BW: I have worked with a photographer in Los Angeles by the name of Scott Hoover. That was my first photo shoot, actually. He flew me out first class, paid all travel expenses, food, etc and was a total professional. It was a great experience for me and I learned a lot. I also work with a guy in my area by the name of Phil Neff. You can check them both out at their websites. http://www.modelmayhem.com/173209 and http://www.scotthoover.biz/.
WP: What are you goals?
BW: My main goal is to establish myself in the fitness industry and land some type of exposure in a fitness magazine. I would also like to represent a supplement brand or some type of product in the fitness world. Eventually after college, I plan on opening a Physical Therapy practice combined with a personal training studio and also further advance in the fitness industry.
WP: How does your training differ when you are modeling and when you are not?
BW: I'm too short for runway stuff, so fitness modeling is what I'm stuck with. My training mostly is always planned and periodized to help me advance in that area. Cardio and diet may be the only thing I really change substantially when it comes to doing a photo shoot.
WP: That is the reason a lot of models go into fitness modeling is due to their height. But, with your physique, you fit right in. What future projects do you have planned?
BW: Currently, I am working on a movie right now titled, "HAZE", directed by David Burkman. We start filming in June. Also, I always stay focused on my goal of being in a fitness magazine.
WP: What are your strengths and weaknesses in bodybuilding?
BW: I'd have to say that my strongest point is my intensity in the gym and with my mindset. Mental toughness is a requirement if you are going to make it in the world of bodybuilding. I am focused on a goal and I am the type of person that won’t stop until I get there; and then I'll keep going. In terms of weakness, I don’t really have one when it comes to my determination or my workouts. Physically, my legs could be bigger.
WP: So many people have problems staying motivated. What problems have you had as far as staying motivated and disciplined to stick with your workouts?
BW: None! I stay hungry for this. I work in a gym everyday for hours as my full time job. I look myself in the mirror everyday and remind myself of every person who said I couldn't, and then tell myself that if I don't make it, the only person who had stopped me, would have been myself.
WP: What keeps fitness interesting to you?
BW: It is always changing. So many new research articles or new methods are being talked about that it's hard not to stay intrigued by it all. Also, the satisfaction I get when I help someone else feel better about their body and their life just makes it worth every bit of time spent with them.
WP: With just the way you answer your questions makes me know why you are so popular in this industry! Tell me something about yourself that no one else knows. It’s just between us, no one else will know. Ha-ha.
BW: I love professional wrestling, mainly WWE. I don't know what it is about it, but I'm hooked. I try to keep that to myself. Ha-ha.
WP: That is too cute! I love asking that question. How have you changed over the years?
BW: I've grown up a lot. I'm only 22 and I own my own house and my own business. All of my friends from High School are ‘partying it up’ every weekend while I’m at home writing up a new workout, or living it up outdoors with mountain biking, skateboarding, or fishing. I feel that drinking gets in the way of everything I am trying to accomplish with my body.
WP: I don't understand how people can say going out and getting drunk is fun and the way of life! To me, it's a miserable life to live when you have to drink to have fun. I would much rather do things like hike, workout, etc. People ask me, "What club do you go to?" I tell them, "The only club you will find me in is a fitness club!" Ha-ha!
Any shout outs?
BW: Sure. To my brother, Trevor, for being as strong as he has been. He’s been a really motivator for me. To Scott Hoover, who introduced me to fitness photography. And, and to all my boys at the gym who are always there to throw the iron around.
WP: Explain your workouts to me.
BW: Right now, I am doing DoggCrapp training. It incorporates a lot of rest-pause techniques and the importance of only doing 1-2 sets per exercise and 5-6 exercises per workout. I'm on an ABA split right now, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. It's all about intensity. It’s helping me get SWOLE. So, I am loving it.
WP: What is your diet?
BW: I’m coming off of a bulk right now, so I was taking in around 4000 calories a day. I’m getting ready to cut up for summer, so I'll consume a lot less, maybe between 2200 and 2800 calories per day.
WP: Who had the most impact on you in your life thus far?
BW: Role model wise it's been Arnold Schwarzenegger and professional wrestler John Cena. I've always wanted to have a physique like theirs and it helps me strive toward something. I figure if I always have a goal, or many goals for that matter, I am always moving forward and never standing still.
WP: What were you like in high school?
BW: Preppy. I hung out with the jocks, but I had the worse acne you could imagine. Let’s just say my self esteem wasn't what it is today.
WP: I can see you as preppy. Please describe a typical day for you. What is your daily routine like?
BW: I wake up and have a protein shake. 30 minutes later, I eat breakfast and then head to work. I eat my meals every 2-3 hours and workout anywhere between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., depending on my schedule with my clients that day. After the gym, I head home, have dinner, shower, relax for a bit and head to bed for a good nights rest.
WP: What are your hobbies outside of fitness?
BW: I love to mountain bike and hike. I also fish and spend time with my wife and family. I'm not too bad of an artist either, when I find the time to sit down with a pencil.
WP: What type of music do you listen to?
BW: When I'm driving, I listen to more alternative music, but in the gym, my Ipod blares anything from Pantera and Five Finger Death Punch, to Eminem and 50 cent.
WP: Tell me about your family. Your spouse, kids, etc.
BW: No kids yet. I have many things I wish to do before that happens. My wife and I have known each other since High School and have been really good friends for a long time. We decided to get married in 2007, and have been married for almost two years. I have no regrets. It’s one of the best decisions I have made.
WP: You just gave me chill bumps! That is so sweet! Sounds like you two are very close.
What supplements do you take and why?
BW: I've tried a lot of supplements, but feel that the staples my routine have always been whey protein, casein protein, creatine, BCAA's, and Glutamine. I feel that these are essential to muscle hypertrophy (growth) and also in recovery. In my opinion the most important thing is your nutrition. Everything else does exactly as it should. "Supplements" - what you are already doing.
WP: How would you like to improve, if any?
BW: Just help as many people as possible realize how important their health is. Taking first place in my first competition wouldn’t be so bad either. Ha-ha.
WP: That would be awesome, wouldn't it? Just keep your eyes on your goals! Anything you would like to mention before we close?
BW: Yes, keep a look out in the next year the movie I am in, "HAZE". And remember "Suffer the pain of discipline, or suffer the pain of regret..."
WP: It's been a pleasure interviewing you! You are one of a kind!
