Competitor of the Month - Adam Hawryliw
September 2009
Interviewed by: Tammy Renee
Q. Congratulations on winning our Competitor of the Month. We are excited. Where did you grow up at and tell us a little about yourself?I am a 24 old male from a little town in Saskatchewan. I had the luxury of growing up in the city and a farm. I love sports, animals, having fun, and goofing around.
Q. What has been your stepping stone to get where you are today?
Some of the stepping stones were working in the oil patch; it was very hard to stay motivated with no gym and no regular schedule. But now, working in the emergency side of life, it makes it easier to plan ahead my meals, workouts, and most of all cardio.
Q. What has it been like to maintain your physique? Have you done anything different lately?
It is really tough for me. I have an incredible sweet tooth. Ahh. For the different part lately been watching what I eat and portions. I also have a big support team and great Personal Trainer named Jenny Arnold at jennyarnoldmovement.com.
Q. Jenny was one of the people that nominated you for this title! She was actually one of our winners and is featured in our print magazine right now. So, I believe you have competed before? Can you tell me more about it?
Yes, I have I joined the Body Proud Fame Association. It is a all-natural completion world wide. They are amazing and look after their athletes. They have many different categories ranging from Open to Pro. Take a look at there website at bodyproud.org to see more.
Q. Are you planning to compete again in the future?Ha-ha! You bet I am! It is addicting.
Q. What other sports or activities did or do you enjoy?
I professional bull rider, play competitive soccer, hockey, football, lacrosse, and rugby. I enjoy all water sports, although I sink like a rock. I like to play all kinds of sports and I love just being active.
Q. Tell me about your family. In addition, are you married, single, or dating?
Well, I have great parents who are still married and support my every move. My older sister is getting married this month. And I have an older brother who is already married. I am the baby of the family and am still looking for that great someone.
Q. Sounds like you have a great family! What has the Fame competitions taught you thus far? The FAME competitions taught me more self values, respect, determination, as well as, there is a lot of people who love and take pride in their body. What was the hardest thing for you to overcome when you first started?
The food! Ha-ha! It was so hard not to eat whatever I wanted, when I wanted.
Q. What was the hardest thing you had to deal with when it came to your diet?
Not having the sweets like I wanted.
Q. What are the key factors that dictate the way you train today?
One is part of my job, second is my family, and the third is Jenny Arnold. Ha-ha! She drives me and sees a lot in me, so I don’t want to let her down.
Q. How has your training changed over the years?
My training went from a power lifting style to more of an athlete style. Where I was lifting heavy, getting to my max every time, now it is more the reps and the right form.Q. What titles/accomplishments have you thus far? Tell me about them.
Well, in the competions that I went to I placed in every one. I started out in a regional show in Calgary, AB. I competed in a swimsuit and fitness model competition, in the open categories. I won 1st in swimsuit and 4th in fitness. From that show, I qualified for the worlds in Montreal. I competed, again, in both swimsuit and fitness in the advanced category. I won 1st in the swimsuit and 5th in fitness.
Q. Wow! You must be very proud! Where do you see your career and life in 10 years from now?
I would like to say in ten years, to have my Pro- Card, been in a few magazines, as well as maybe, even a modeling contract.
Q. Well, you will be in our magazine this coming issue for winning this title. So, that is one magazine already! Ha-ha! Can you tell me any photographers you’ve worked with, or someone you would like to work with?
I have worked with Paul Sayers, Owner of View Point Photography and Tim Rollans. Those are the ones I have worked with and I would work with anyone who would like to work with me.
Q. Tim Rollans has been with us for several years now. He is outstanding! What supplements do you currently take?
I take BSN’s Syntha 6, Cell Mass, and Nitrix. I also take Allmax Nutrition which also makes the CLA and Isofelx. I also take Gaspari Nutrition’s Super Pump 250. In addition, I take InterActive Nutrition’s IsoWhey Breezer.
Q. What are your pet peeves?
My pet peeves are someone chewing finger nails and when guys and girls stare at themselves at the gym and rarely workout. In addition, when guys and gals try and talk to you while you are working out during mid-set. And one more thing; stuck up girls.
Q. What do you consider to be important in life, and why?
I consider family, health, exercise, and good friends to be important. Why? Because your family will be there through thick and thin. I also picked health and exercise so I live happier, healthier, and longer. And good friends; because there like family.
Q. How have you changed over the past few years when it comes to thinking, actions, and life in general?
I take life more serious as we are really fragile and I find good friends are hard to come by. They will be your friend when they want something, but when the tables are turns, it is different. But, life in general, is what you make of it yourself.
Q. What are your stats such as height, weight, biceps, and waist?
My height is 5’8. My weight varies between 178 to182 pounds. My biceps are 17 inches and waist is a 29 or 30 inch.
Q. Any shout outs?
My shout out goes to the guys; George and Leslie at the Fit Shop in West Edmonton Mall, right besides the Gold’s Gym. I want to say thank you to the best Personal Trainer in the world, Jenny Arnold and to her little ones and husband. You can see her website at jennyarnoldmovement.com. A special thanks goes out to Krista LaFreniere and Jeremy Zimmerman, Pierre Lajoie, and my family and friends, my sponsors, and everyone at Body Proud at bodyproud.org.
